I realized that I have been alive for twenty years.
I was sprawled on the floor, talking to my parents (funny how I have to call them on my birthday, not the other way around) and my father said something along the line of "Already 20... on your own." There was such awe underlying his usually stoic voice that something within me stirred.
Suddenly I was not just lying complacently amongst crunchy remnants of month-old snack crumbles. I was whisked away by "My Life in Music Montage Form", the musical.

Susie is born. After a brief stint in China she grows up as a nomad of the contiguous forty-eight. She was a wide eyed wanderer, carried by the stream, until recently. HOLY FUCK. I have been alive for twenty years. My life is a quarter of the way through. So far in my twenty years, I have managed to attend college. THAT has been my greatest accomplishment so far. I have other things stewing in the corners, sure, but that's been my only solid achievement. I want to be a writer, a pioneer, a lover, a coy villainess. I want to stomp over the world in stilettos and blisters.
In most Asian countries, 20 is the age of adulthood rather than 18. To me, that seems fitting.
